Excursion Itinerary:
Day 1: Marrakech – Ouzoud Waterfalls – Return to Marrakec
The tour begins with a pickup at your hotel or riad in Marrakech. We head northeast, leaving the city behind as we venture into the landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. The approximately 2.5-hour drive takes us through farmland, Berber villages, and rolling hills that signal the approaching waterfalls.
We arrived at the Ouzoud Waterfalls, a natural wonder standing 110 meters tall and surrounded by lush olive groves and reddish cliffs. The name “Ouzoud” means “the olive” in Berber, in honor of the olive trees that dot the area.
You’ll have time to explore the area along various trails. You can hike down to the base of the waterfalls to feel the force of the water, watch the Barbary macaques that live in the area, or climb up to the upper lookouts for panoramic views. Rainbows forming in the mist are a common sight.
At lunchtime, you’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal at a restaurant with a terrace overlooking the waterfalls—one of the most memorable moments of the day.
In the afternoon, we’ll begin our return journey to Marrakech, with the option to stop for photos at the most picturesque spots along the way. We’re scheduled to arrive in the Red City in the late afternoon, bringing this refreshing getaway into nature to a close.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to get to the Ouzoud Waterfalls from Marrakech?
Approximately 3 hours (about 150 km). We set out early, around 8:00 a.m., to make the most of the day. The trip is comfortable, with well-maintained roads and ever-changing scenery: first plains, then hills, and finally mountains.
Is it worth driving 3 hours to see the waterfalls?
Absolutely. Ouzoud is the highest waterfall in North Africa (110 meters) and one of Morocco’s most breathtaking landscapes. The surroundings—with olive groves, red-hued ravines, and Berber villages—are spectacular. Plus, the journey itself is part of the experience: traveling through the Moroccan countryside and getting a glimpse of rural life.
Is there a long walk? Is it difficult?
There are several options:
-
Easy route: Hike down to the base of the waterfalls (10–15 minutes) along easy trails.
-
Full route: Climb up to the upper lookout points and follow the canyon (1–2 hours, with stairs).
Wear comfortable shoes with good traction (the rocks may be wet). If you have mobility issues, you can stay at the upper overlooks, which offer incredible views, without having to go down.
Is it possible to swim in the waterfalls?
Yes, in the summer you can swim in the natural pools at the base. The water is very cold (it comes from the mountains), but it’s refreshing. Bring a swimsuit and a towel if you want to take a dip. In the winter and spring, the water flow is stronger, so it’s not recommended.
Are there monkeys? Are they coming closer?
Yes, there are families of Barbary macaques (macaques) living in the area. They are mischievous and used to visitors, but you should not feed them (they get agitated and may bite). Enjoy taking photos, but keep your distance and don’t offer them food.
Where do we eat? Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included, but there are several restaurants with terraces offering spectacular views of the waterfalls. Traditional Moroccan cuisine (tajine, couscous, salads, grilled fish). Affordable prices (around €8–12). Your guide will take you to a reliable spot that offers good value for money.
Is there a boat trip?
Yes, at the base of the waterfalls there are small wooden boats (run by locals) that will take you right up to the waterfall for a few coins (about €2–3). It’s optional but a lot of fun, especially for kids. You’ll get a little wet, but it’s worth it!
