Excursion Itinerary:
Day 1: Marrakech – Tahanaout – Asni Valley – Kik Plateau – Agafay Desert
Your two-day adventure through the Agafay Desert begins with a pickup at your riad or hotel in Marrakech. We head south, leaving the city behind to venture into the rural landscape surrounding Marrakech. Our first stop is Tahanaout, a town famous for its olive groves and authentic Berber villages.
We continue toward the foothills of the High Atlas, stopping in the Asni Valley, a peaceful area that offers panoramic views of the mountains and a glimpse into traditional Berber life. This spot is perfect for a short walk and taking your first photos.
From here, we cross the vast landscapes of the Kik Plateau, a spectacular route that leads us directly to the Agafay Desert. Unlike the Sahara, Agafay is a rocky desert, with a unique lunar landscape and an atmosphere of absolute peace, framed by the Atlas Mountains.
Upon arrival, we’ll enjoy a traditional Moroccan lunch surrounded by nature. In the afternoon, one of the most anticipated moments arrives: a camel ride at sunset through the desert hills, with golden light bathing the landscape.
As night falls, we arrive at our desert camp, where we will be welcomed with Moroccan hospitality. A traditional dinner under the stars and a restful night in luxury or bivouac-style tents, surrounded by silence and the vastness of the starry sky.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Agafay Desert? Is it like the Sahara?
The Agafay Desert is a landscape of stone and rock, not sand. Unlike the golden dunes of Merzouga, Agafay offers an arid, moon-like landscape with spectacular views of the High Atlas Mountains. It’s the perfect choice if you don’t have time to travel to the Sahara but want to experience a night in the desert with all the highlights: sunset, dinner under the stars, and sunrise—all just an hour from Marrakech.
Where will we sleep? What's the camp like?
You’ll stay at a “Berber luxury” style camp in the middle of the rocky desert. The tents are spacious, with comfortable beds, bedding, and blankets. The camp features:
-
Shared bathrooms and showers (hot water)
-
Common area with a fire pit
-
Traditional Moroccan dinner
-
Berber music around the fire
It’s not a luxury hotel, but it does offer an authentic and comfortable experience surrounded by nature.
What is the difference between this 2-day tour and the 1-day tour to Agafay?
| Type | 1-day tour | 2-day tour |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 8–9 hours | 24 hours |
| Camel ride | Yes (short) | Yes (sunset) |
| Meals | Lunch | Lunch + dinner + breakfast |
| Night in the desert | No | Yes, with a bonfire and stars |
| Sunrise | No | Yes |
| Relaxation | A little | A lot, without rushing |
| Experience | Quick getaway | Total immersion |
The 2-day option is a much more complete and relaxed experience.
Can we see the snow-capped Atlas Mountains?
Yes, especially from December to April. The views of the snow-capped High Atlas Mountains from Agafay are spectacular. The contrast between the rocky desert and the white mountains is one of the most photographed highlights of the tour.
Are there any walking trails or hiking routes?
The tour includes gentle walks around the camp and the Kik Plateau area, but it’s not a strenuous hiking trip. If you want to walk more, you can do so on your own (always following the guide’s instructions) or book a guided tour. The main thing is to relax and enjoy the scenery.
How do I pack for an overnight stay?
Bring a small backpack with everything you’ll need for the night: warm clothes (nights in the desert are cold even in summer), a camera, toiletries, and a light jacket. You can leave your large suitcase in the vehicle overnight.
What happens if the weather is bad?
Tours will take place unless weather conditions are extreme. If there is a weather advisory (torrential rain, hurricane-force winds), we will contact you to reschedule or cancel at no cost. A rainy night in the desert is rare, but if it does happen, the camp has covered areas.
Is it worth it compared to spending a night in the Sahara
| Difficulty | Agafay (2 days) | Sahara (3–4 days) |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 1 hour | 9-10 hours |
| Effort | Minimal | Long trip |
| Landscape | Rocky, lunar | Sand dunes |
| Experience | Intimate, up-close | Epic, remote |
| Ideal for | Quick getaway | Total adventure |
Both are incredible. Agafay is perfect if you’re short on time; the Sahara is for those seeking the full sand desert experience.
